Langley Today

The village of Langley, Berkshire lies to the west of London in the Thames Valley. Historically the Grand Union Canal and the Great Western Rail link as well as old road links such as the Bath Road would have provided early growth in the area.

Today the area's development has been fuelled by it's location just off junction 5 of the M4 and junction 15 of the M25 in Poyle. These major links along with the (A4) Bath Road and the Uxbridge Road makes it a great location for business, light industrial and and residential growth, there are also a number of leisure facilties within the area.

Each year there is a local Carnival which has a procession of floats through the village ending up at the Langley Memorial Ground.

This central location has encouraged the influx of new companies such as the Post Office, Honda, Telewest, Allport and new housing developments from Redrow, Bellway and Barratt.

The village centre at Harrow Market is well served by shops, pubs, restaurants, conference facilities, local transport, churches, schools and a college.

The road links are supplemented by a mainline rail station in Langley which is situated just along Station Road, only a short walk from Harrow Market in the centre of Langley Village. Thames Trains run the service between London Paddington and Langley Station, approximately every 30 minutes.

The Carnival has a long history, dating back to the days of the Flower Show when Langley was a rural village centred round its church and duck pond.

After World War 11 local enthusiasts, and the late Percy Beckett prominent among them, revived the annual procession and fete. Then during the 60's, the newly formed Langley Community Association took over, led by Cis Lilford and Cyril Swinnerton.

By the early 70's, they sought assistance from the Playleadership Group, headed by Iris Balchin, with all other local associations asked to co-operate, the Langley Carnival Association as we know it today, was formed.

With general guidance from its Area Co-ordinator, John Mumford, the Carnival went from strength to strength. The aim of the Association is to raise money for local deserving causes.

An AGM takes place in November, when Association members elect an Executive Committee. That Committee has a dual aim. Both to promote and organise the Carnival and at the same time to raise money for such beneficiaries as are chosen each year. This is in addition to money raised by the Member Association stall holders.

The Annual Langley Carnival on the second Saturday in July at the Langley Memorial Recreation Ground, is a day of fun and entertainment. A day which brings young and old together in one place, in the true tradition and spirit of carnival.
